Well, that depends. All website developers can be divided into roughly three groups – and who you choose often depends on your budget and business plan. You’ve heard of these types of web developers:
Amateurs: anyone who is not in business for themselves. They could be a relative or friend or even a college student or post-grad.
Technical-based Web Developers: these are real businesses, usually start ups, where the owner usually has a technical degree or tech background. They will tell you right up front that they are very techie and that is their value to you. As these web developers mature, they might grow into a business solution firm.
Communications / Marketing First Companies: these are firms who have added website developers to their payroll as the web became another marketing tool. These developers work on an hourly basis, and, although experienced, often have a different level of commitment to the “job”, the customer and customer care. They are (often very skilled) “hired hands.”
